Over the years of living in EssaouiraI have become very interested in the antique moroccan rugs from various villages in the Atlas mountains.

I have recently been sourcing these beautiful works of art for various clients mainly in the Uk. If anyone is interested I have a few samples of 4 of my favourites and would be more than happy to source for anyone whether it be 1 rug or 200! Unfortunately these rugs are dying out as the world even in morocco has become more modern and looms are now being used which takes away most of the character, in say 50 years these rugs will be no longer found, they really are a treasure! Beni Oauran:

These are my favourite and predominantly white with black diamonds, triangles or naive figures on top, each rug is a one off piece made normally by the woman in the family quite a few years after she has children in her spare time, normally this rug would be worked on for an hour or 2 each day and not be completed until 1 year, once finished this would be used in the house to keep your feet off a cold concrete floor, they are all hand made and exquisite, made with a special breed of small sheep from the Middle Atlas mountains, this wool is considered to be the best quality in all of Morocco.

Azilal:

The Azilal: Similar to the above in the way that these rugs are made in a woman's spare time but they don't take quite as long to make as a Beni Oauran These too are quite wonderful, they are made in the high atlas, the background is always white, then naive shapes and vibrant symmetrical colours are woven on top, They rarely come very large (maximum 3 metres by 1m 50)

Boujad:

The Boujad is from the middle atlas, again family made to use on the floor of the family home, these rugs are a lot more colourful.

Rehamna:

These rugs are from North Marrakech and usually come in vibrant colours, their main characteristic is that the rug is finished with a goat hair edging.

These rugs are all one off original pieces all made by hand, they have all been professionally cleaned. Please note they are antiques and some inperfections may be found, normally on the underside of the rugs.
