Both Dar Beida and Dar Emma are within the old Medina walls, surrounded by the whitewashed streets, traditional souks, cafés, restaurants, food markets and independent shops that make Essaouira so distinctive.
At the same time, you are never far from the Atlantic. Both houses are approximately a 10-minute walk from Essaouira’s long sandy beach. So whether you want to wander through the Medina, eat fresh seafood by the harbour, spend an afternoon on the beach or simply enjoy the atmosphere of an old Moroccan town, everything is close at hand.

What’s Around the Houses?
Staying inside the Medina means that much of Essaouira can be discovered without a car.
From the houses, you can wander through the narrow streets, stop for Moroccan mint tea, browse the souks, visit artisan workshops or head towards the harbour for freshly caught fish. For food lovers, the Medina is full of restaurants and small local food spots. Meanwhile, the beach offers a completely different side of Essaouira, with wide sands, Atlantic views and the famous coastal wind. And because Essaouira is compact, you can easily return to the house during the day before heading out again in the evening.

One of the pleasures of staying with Castles in the Sand is being able to experience Essaouira without constantly relying on taxis or cars.
The Old Medina is the natural starting point. Its whitewashed buildings, blue doors, souks and atmospheric lanes lead towards the harbour and Skala.
Beyond the Medina walls, the Atlantic opens out onto Essaouira’s broad sandy beach. The city is also well known for its wind and water sports, making the surrounding coast popular with surfers, kitesurfers and windsurfers.

What Is the Weather Like in Essaouira?
Essaouira has a distinctive Atlantic coastal climate, with mild temperatures, sunshine and a refreshing sea breeze. The wind is part of the character of the city, and one of the reasons Essaouira has become so popular for surfing, kitesurfing and other watersports.
It also means that evenings and breezier days can feel cooler than you might expect, particularly close to the ocean. We recommend bringing layers so you can enjoy the Medina, beach and terraces comfortably throughout your stay.

Getting Around Essaouira
Exploring the Medina on Foot
For most guests, walking is the easiest way to experience the historic centre.
Both houses are within the Medina, where the streets are largely pedestrianised. Restaurants, shops, markets and many of Essaouira’s main sights are therefore easily accessible on foot.
For journeys outside the Medina, taxis and private transfers can be arranged or recommended. If you are arriving from Marrakech or travelling elsewhere in Morocco, contact Emma before your stay and we can help you plan the journey.

How do I get to Essaouira?
Essaouira is easy to reach from Marrakech and other Moroccan cities by bus, private transfer or car. If you are unsure which option suits your journey, Emma can advise you before you arrive.
Is there an airport in Essaouira?
Yes. Essaouira-Mogador Airport (ESU) is approximately 16 km from the Medina. Flight routes and frequencies vary by season, so check current schedules when planning your trip.
How do I get from Essaouira airport to the Medina?
You can travel by taxi or private transfer. As both houses are inside the historic Medina, vehicles cannot reach the front door, so you will need to walk the final part of the journey.
How do I get from Marrakech to Essaouira?
You can travel by coach, private transfer or rental car. The journey is roughly three hours by road, depending on traffic, stops and your chosen transport.
Do I need a car in Essaouira?
Not for most stays. Both houses are inside the Medina, with restaurants, cafés, shops, markets, the harbour and beach all within walking distance. A car or private driver is useful if you plan to explore further afield.
Can I drive directly to the holiday houses?
No. The historic Medina is largely pedestrianised, so cars cannot reach either house directly. You will need to park outside the Medina and walk the remaining distance.
Is parking available near the houses?
Yes. There are parking areas outside the Medina. If you are arriving by car, Emma can advise you on the most convenient place to park and how best to reach your house.
What is arrival like with luggage?
Because the houses are inside the Medina, expect to walk part of the way with your luggage. If you have heavy bags, young children or particular access requirements, let Emma know before arrival so she can advise you.

Both Dar Emma and Dar Beida are approximately a 10-minute walk from Essaouira’s long sandy beach.
What is near the holiday houses?
Both houses are surrounded by the Medina’s restaurants, cafés, shops and markets. Dar Emma is near Place Moulay Hassan, while Dar Beida is near Bab Doukkala and the local food quarter. The harbour and Skala are also within walking distance.
Is Essaouira easy to explore without a car?
Yes. The Medina and central Essaouira are compact and best explored on foot. For places further afield, taxis, private transfers and organised excursions are readily available.
Is the Medina suitable for guests with limited mobility?
The historic Medina has narrow streets, uneven surfaces, steps and pedestrian-only areas, and neither house is accessible by car. If mobility is a consideration, please contact Emma before booking so she can discuss access with you.
